Energy saving tips for your home

As the earths population becomes denser industry is growing to accommodate these changes.

We are burning more fossil fuels to create energy for increasing demands, but need to reduce CO2 levels to a level significantly below that of 1990.

This will involve changes in policy from a political level right down to changes in our day to day lives, but you can make a bigger difference by doing as many of these things as possible:

At home

  • Use accredited Green energy!
  • Turn lights off when you leave the room.
  • Choose top-star energy rating appliances.
  • Keep curtains closed at night to retain heat.
  • Use fans instead of air conditioning systems.
  • Heat/cool only the main living areas of your house.
  • Replace incandescent bulbs with fluorescent bulbs.
  • Wear a jumper instead of turning up your thermostat.
  • Use draught excluders and insulation to keep heat inside the house.

In your kitchen

  • Let your plates drip/air dry.
  • Wait till the dishwasher is full before starting a cycle.
  • Thaw frozen food overnight rather than in the microwave.
  • Use the minimum amount of water when boiling a kettle or cooking.
  • Ensure ventilation areas of the fridge are clear for fan air to circulate.

In your laundry

  • Wash your clothes in cold water and line-dry
  • Iron lighter fabrics with residual heat from switched off iron.
  • Clean the lint-filter in your dryer and air-con to improve air flow.

In your living rooms

  • Unplug bar fridges when not in use - saves $200 a year!
  • Unplug any unused charger, audio device, or appliance in standby mode

In your bathroom

  • Take 4 minute showers or replace your systems with solar hot water systems.
